Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of mainland Portugal and north of the Canary Islands. The island is relatively small but very hilly, meaning that travel between locations often offers dramatic views of mountains, valleys and the sea.

Funchal is located on the south coast and is the natural starting point for many trips to Madeira. Madeira Airport, Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, is located east of Funchal near Santa Cruz. From the capital, it is easy to reach attractions such as Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão, Curral das Freiras, Santana and Porto Moniz.
